3D Nail Art: Techniques, Levels, and Products for Creating Volume Nail Art

3D nail art is one of the specialties that sets a nail artist apart. Not everyone masters it, not every product supports it, and not every client requests it, but when it shows up, it creates immediate impact and becomes the work that gets shared, photographed, and remembered most.

In 3D nail art there is an entire universe of techniques, materials, and volume levels ranging from the most subtle relief, almost imperceptible, to sculptures that transform the nail into a miniature work of art. Knowing which product to use in each situation is what defines the quality of the result and the efficiency of your salon work.

In this post we cover everything: from subtle relief to high-impact 3D, with every tool in the Pink Mask portfolio explained in depth.

Volume Levels: Not All 3D Is the Same

Before getting into products, it helps to understand that volume work comes in different levels of complexity and height.

Level 1, Subtle Relief: Small elevations that add texture without reaching true 3D. More perceptible to the touch than to the eye. Ideal for clients who want something different without going overboard.

Level 2, Structured 3D: Designs with clearly visible volume, flowers, raised lines, geometric shapes with height. The classic of tridimensional nail art.

Level 3, Miniature Sculpture: Complex figures, significant height, competition or editorial-level work. Requires advanced technical mastery and high-density materials.

Each level has its ideal product. Knowing which to use saves time, avoids frustration, and guarantees a professional result.

Corrective Base Gel: The Starting Point for the Most Subtle Relief

Pink Mask Corrective Base Gel was not designed exclusively for 3D work. Its primary function is to correct surface irregularities on the natural nail. But its dense consistency and ability to hold shape without shifting make it a perfect tool for creating subtle relief and micro textures that add dimension without reaching true 3D.

It is ideal for nail artists who want to introduce volume into their work gradually, or for designs that require very controlled elevation: raised lines, elevated contours, textured dot work.

How to use it for relief:

  • Apply over the prepared base on already-cured gel color
  • Work with a fine brush to build small elevations
  • Cure under the lamp and seal with Top Coat
  • No need for thick layers: its consistency does the work

What it achieves that other products cannot: a near-seamless integration between the relief and the nail surface, without the abrupt volume jump that sometimes shows with denser products.

Solid Gel Clear: Total Versatility for Sculptures, Appliqués, and Volume

Solid Gel Clear is the most versatile product in the Pink Mask 3D line. Its revolutionary formula was originally designed to bond Easy Tips extensions, but its behavior makes it equally effective for volume nail art work.

Key features:

  • High viscosity that holds shape when molded
  • No inhibition layer: can be worked with fingers without sticky residue
  • Does not adhere to skin during manipulation
  • Strong adhesion and flexibility once cured
  • Cures in 60 seconds under the lamp

How to use it for 3D:

  • Freeform sculptures molded by hand or with tools like the Easy Tool or Dotting Tool
  • Base for decorative appliqués that need a solid foundation
  • Medium-height relief decorations
  • Encapsulation of flat decorative elements within the volume
  • Can be mixed with glitter or other materials to add color or effects

Pro tip: Because it does not adhere to skin, Solid Gel Clear allows you to shape directly with your fingers before curing, giving a very intuitive level of control for nail artists just getting started with 3D work.

Colored Solid Gel: 3D With Color Built In

The colored version of Solid Gel, known as the "clay" of nail art, takes the capabilities of Solid Gel Clear to the next level: color is already integrated into the formula, eliminating the step of painting sculptures after curing.

Available in a carefully selected palette for nail art. Its high-viscosity consistency makes it perfect for molding at your own pace without displacement.

Key features:

  • High viscosity with medium curing speed: working time without rushing
  • Does not adhere to skin during manipulation
  • Integrated color: no need to paint the sculpture afterward
  • Cures under UV/LED lamp in 60 seconds
  • Low odor during application
  • Suitable for finger molding (gloves recommended) or tools such as Easy Tool, Silicone Tool, or brushes

How to use it:

  • 3D flowers with directly molded colored petals
  • Geometric figures with volume and uniform color
  • Designs that combine construction and color in a single step

Pro tip: Lightly blending different Solid Gel colors together before curing creates marbled or chromatic transition effects within the sculpture, with no need to paint separate layers.

Solid Builder Gel: The Structural Base That Also Does 3D

Pink Mask Solid Builder Gel is primarily a construction product designed for extensions with Dual Forms, but its high viscosity and ability to hold height make it a strong ally for high-volume 3D work on natural nails or extensions.

Key features:

  • High viscosity for robust work with considerable height
  • Medium curing speed for comfortable working time
  • Low odor
  • Does not adhere to skin
  • Cures in 60 seconds under UV/LED

How to use it for 3D:

  • Very high volumes where structure and durability are needed
  • Solid base for heavy appliqués such as large stones or metal elements
  • Extensions with 3D design integrated from the construction phase

Tex Gel: The Product Built Specifically for High-Impact 3D

Tex Gel is the product Pink Mask developed specifically for tridimensional nail art work.

It is a high-density gel designed for the most demanding 3D applications. Its consistency keeps it exactly where it is placed without shifting, allowing you to build without losing shape during the process and to create irregular figures and high-relief structures.

Key features:

  • High density: stays in place without shifting
  • Supports irregular figures and tall relief structures
  • No inhibition layer
  • Cures in 60 seconds under the lamp
  • Photosensitive: must be protected from light between uses
  • Perfect for chrome and mirror powder effects applied over the cured volume

How to use it:

  • Large tridimensional figures
  • Tall relief with complex shapes
  • Base for chrome and mirror effects over 3D work
  • Designs that require solid, durable structure
  • Irregular designs

Recommended tool: Easy Tool spatula to pick up and mold the exact amount without contaminating the remaining product.

Easy Glue: Builds Volume and Bonds Appliqués

Easy Glue enters the 3D world from a different angle: both for building volume on its own and for bonding tridimensional decorative elements, strass, stones, crystals, metal appliqués, dried flowers, pearls, with outstanding hold.

Key features:

  • Translucent adhesive with applicator tip for controlled dosing
  • 8g long-lasting presentation
  • Hold of up to 2 weeks with correct curing
  • Cures under 48W lamp or higher in 60 seconds
  • Excellent consistency and adhesion

The most common mistake: covering the appliqué completely with Top Coat. This encapsulates it, dulls its natural shine, and can compromise the bond. Top Coat goes only around the perimeter edge to seal the connection without covering the decoration.

Easy Gel / Polygel: 3D Effects Built Into the Structure

Pink Mask Easy Gel (Polygel) is primarily an extension-building product, but when worked in certain ways, it allows volume and tridimensional effects to be incorporated directly into the nail structure.

How to achieve 3D effects with Easy Gel:

Volume encapsulation: Placing flat decorative elements such as powders or glitter inside a layer of Easy Gel before curing creates a tridimensional depth effect, as if the design is "floating" inside the nail.

Construction with integrated relief: When shaping Easy Gel with the Easy Tool, you can deliberately leave one area higher than another to create a shape with soft relief that follows the design.

Base for subsequent 3D work: An extension built with Easy Gel is the perfect surface for working with Tex Gel, Solid Gel, or appliqués with Easy Glue, as it provides the hardest and most even surface possible.

Easy Gel is always worked with the Easy Tool (palette for picking up and placing the bead, oval brush No. 8 for shaping) and cures under a 48W lamp or higher. Removal can be done partially with remover or completely with an e-file.

Pro Tips for 3D Nail Art Work

Always use the ProLuminance Compact to pre-cure individual appliqués. When working flower by flower or element by element, curing in the main lamp every time breaks your workflow. The ProLuminance Compact lets you pre-cure each appliqué right in place without moving the entire hand.

Clean your tools immediately. Tex Gel and Solid Gel harden quickly when exposed to ambient light. An Easy Tool or brush left uncleaned after use is ruined within minutes.

Maximum height is built in layers, not all at once. For very tall volumes with Tex Gel, building in two or three cured layers ensures better adhesion and prevents the weight of uncured gel from deforming the figure during the process.

Protect photosensitive products while you work. Tex Gel and Solid Gel react to any light, not just the lamp. Working near a window with direct sunlight can begin curing the product before it is in the correct position.

For chrome effects over 3D, the cured surface of Tex Gel without an inhibition layer is ideal: applying mirror or chrome powder directly with a sponge applicator over the already-cured figure creates a high-impact metallic result that cannot be achieved over conventional gel.

Easy Glue holds longer with a porous surface. Pre-filing is not optional: without porosity, adhesion drops significantly. A fine file on the exact area of the appliqué makes the difference between a strass stone that lasts several weeks and one that does not.
